Message from the Chief

The Columbus Technical College Police Department is proud to be accredited by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (GAPOST) and fully certified through the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP). This certification shows our strong commitment to keeping our campus safe and building trust within our college community.

The GACP State Certification Program is considered the gold standard in public safety. It’s awarded only to departments that meet high standards in professionalism, transparency, and community engagement.

We want you to know that our officers are here for you. They’re friendly, approachable, and ready to help with any safety or security concerns you may have. Take a moment to introduce yourself when you see them around campus—they’re always happy to connect.

Your safety is our top priority. If you ever need assistance or have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any member of our team. We’re here to help!

Safety Awareness – Active Shooter/Threat

I want to take a moment to discuss an important aspect of our safety protocols regarding the potential of an active shooter or threat event. The most critical step we can take is the preparation we do before any violent incident occurs. It’s essential to be proactive and aware. Here are some key points to consider:

1. **Be Prepared**: Familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures in place.
2. **Trust Your Instincts**: Always listen to your gut feelings; if something feels off, it’s worth investigating.
3. **Study Your Surroundings**: Regularly analyze your environment, noting potential escape routes and safe hiding spots.
4. **Ask Yourself ‘What If’ Questions**: Consider the different scenarios that could arise and how you would respond.

Remember, you are responsible for your own safety. In the event of an incident, take a moment to assess your options and make a quick decision that prioritizes your security. Staying aware and prepared can make a significant difference in such situations.

Remember:

  • Call 911 immediately.
  • Take the necessary precautions and actions to protect your well-being.
  • DO NOT pull the fire alarm to alert others as this may put others in danger.
  • RUN/AVOIDthe threat by fleeing the area if safe to do so.
  • HIDE/DENYaccess by hiding and barricading if unable to escape – doors locked, lights off, remain silent. Consider texting 911 or your CTC Police Department if safe to do so.
  • FIGHT/DEFENDyourself by fighting back as a last resort.
  • Remain in place until authorities advise it is safe.
